Frédéric Debreu is the legendary, enigmatic, much loved (and entirely fictional) chansonnier, celebrated in Alex’s novel, The Resurrection of Frédéric Debreu. Having greatly enjoyed the novel and its tantalising snippets of Monsieur Debreu’s lyrics, Paul persuaded Alex to join him in creating a back catalogue for the great chansonnier (in English translation, of course). This album is the end result. True to the traditions of chanson, the songs are by turns humorous, satirical, poignant and moving.

The songs reflect the admiration Alex and Paul have for Jake Thackray and Georges Brassens. As Paul collaborated closely with John Watterson on The Lost Will, playing guitar and finishing some of Thackray’s incomplete songs, who better to bring Debreu’s songs to life than John? As Fake Thackray he has toured with Fairport Convention and performed at Latitude, Cropredy and the Edinburgh Fringe Festivals. He has also played for Jake’s family. He has appeared regularly on national and local radio, including Cerys Matthews’ Radio 2 documentary about Thackray and Radio 4’s Great Lives.
